Aftercare
Caring for your new tattoo
Keep this page handy. Good aftercare is what makes a tattoo heal clean and stay sharp.
The first 24 hours
Leave the covering on for the time your artist tells you. When you take it off, wash your hands first, then gently clean the tattoo with lukewarm water and a fragrance free soap. Pat it dry with a clean paper towel.
Washing and moisturising
Wash the tattoo twice a day. After a few days, apply a thin layer of a fragrance free moisturiser. Thin is key. Too much cream traps moisture and slows healing.
What to avoid
For two weeks, keep it out of pools, baths, saunas and direct sun. Do not pick or scratch, even when it flakes. Wear loose clothing over a fresh tattoo.
How it heals
A tattoo looks its worst around day three to five, when it flakes and itches. This is normal. The skin settles over two to four weeks and the colour finds its final tone.
When to get in touch
A little redness and swelling early on is normal. If you see spreading redness, heat, or anything that worries you, email us at hello@blacklarktattoo.co.uk and speak to your GP if needed.
